Hello, my name is Kalynn Turner and I am apart of the Chancellor’s Leadership Development program at NC State University. This program has been a great opportunity for me to meet other NC State students from rural areas in North Carolina. Being in the program, I have been able to make a lot of connections, such as professional, personal, and mentoring connections. Being in this program has given me more confidence to chase my dreams, and I feel that it has really given me the tools to be successful at whatever I do. Not only has the program given me more confidence, it has given me a sense of belonging at NC State. This is because it has given me a family within my cohort and a support system through the Shelton Leadership Center. This family has been there to support me through my first year of college. Through this program, I have grown from many exceptional experiences into a better leader.

The mission statement for the Shelton Leadership Center is “To inspire, educate, and develop values-based leaders committed to personal integrity, professional ethics, and selfless service.” and the Chancellor’s Leadership Development Program has definitely taught me how to be a “values-based leader” in my everyday life.

Second-Year Role

Every second year in the program is assigned a leadership role in the program. For my second year role, I was the “First Year Liaison”. As the first year liaison, I was meant to be the link between the first and second year cohorts. This meant that I was expected to always be accessible to the first years if they ever run into any issues and need advice or support. I also served on a leadership team that met weekly to discuss what was happening in the program and make any adjustment or give any suggestions on how the program could run smoother. I really loved having this role because it has taught me a lot about leadership and organization. Especially because my job involved keeping up with around twenty freshmen. It has been so rewarding to help each and everyone of them grow and become the best leaders that they can be. The photo below truly represent what my role has been in this program.
